SEAToday.com, Boston - A teenage girl from Boston, Massachusetts, United States (US) suffered paralysis of her vocal cords after contracting Covid-19. The 15-year-old's case became the first rare case and was published in the medical journal Pediatrics on Tuesday (12/19).

Doctors performed an endoscopic examination, the results of which showed bilateral vocal cord paralysis. This is the immobility of both vocal cords located in the larynx or voice box. They concluded that this paralysis was due to the after-effects of COVID-19, as no other cause was found after the examination. According to experts, this case of bilateral vocal cord paralysis is the first in a child after COVID-19 infection.

As a result, the teenager required tracheostomy surgery, in which a hole is made in the throat below the voice box. This was to help him breathe for more than a year.
