SEAToday.com, Bangkok - The Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok announced that Thailand repatriated three rescued orangutans back to their natural habitat in Indonesia. The three orangutans arrived in Indonesia on Thursday (12/21).
According to a statement from the Indonesian Embassy in Bangkok, the repatriation was carried out by the Thai government at the request of the Indonesian government under the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES). Director General of the Environment and Forestry Ministry’s Natural Resources and Ecosystem Conservation Satyawan Pudyatmoko explained that the three orangutans were rescued from being smuggled in 2016.
The names of the three orangutans are Nobita, a seven-year-old male, Shizuka, a seven-year-old female, and Brian, a five-year-old male. Before flying back to Indonesia, they were living at the Kho Pratubchang Wildlife Rescue Center (KPRC) in Ratchaburi Province, Thailand. They will be sent to a rehabilitation center in Jambi before being released into their natural habitat.
