SEAToday.com, Gaza - The Israeli military confirms on Tuesday (1/30) that they had flooded the underground tunnels network in Gaza with seawater in bid to “neutralize” Hamas. The military stated that the move is a “significant tool in combating the threat of Hamas’ underground terrorist infrastructure”.
However, experts have warned the move to be dangerous and pose huge risks to the civilians and infrastructures in Gaza. Environmental experts had warned of ecological catastrophe that will leave Gaza without drinkable water. UN officials had also mentioned the risk of buildings and roads collapsing due to the increased pressure of seawater infiltration.
US officials previously had also expressed concerns over the strategy that it could endanger the lives of hostages. It is not clear whether any of the hostages are still in the tunnels.
