SEAToday.com, Jakarta-Some members of the waste management unit in Jakarta, built a boat using used mineral water bottles. This effort not only signifies their dedication to combating littered waste but also aims to repurpose it for better use. This boat may appear like an ordinary speedboat at first glance but upon closer look, we will notice a unique material used in its construction mineral water bottles.
The boat is made by members of the waste management unit in Duren Sawit district, East Jakarta. They collected bottles of various volumes. Some 600-milliliter bottles were utilized for the upper part of the boat, while 19-liter jars formed the bottom.
Before being deployed to gather scattered waste on the river, the boat underwent several balance tests. Interestingly, the balance test proved to be the most challenging aspect of building this boat.
“The difficulty lies in the balance test, maybe because of the lack of materials too. We built one boat for almost two weeks because we didn't work on it continuously. We worked on constructing the boat after completing our task of cleaning the river flow,” said Indra Sianturi, Duren Sawit Water Agency Waste Management unit officer.
Currently, the members of the waste management unit have produced two boats, each with a maximum capacity of six persons. (DKD)
