SEAToday.com, Singapore-Singapore Prime Minister Lee Hsieng Loong announced he will step down on May 15, 2024 after two decades. This statement was released on Monday (4/15).

According to the Singapore Prime Minister’s Office official website, Lee recommended Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Lawrence Wong as the next Prime Minister to President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

“I will step down from my role as Prime Minister on May 15, 2024 and Deputy Prime Minister Lawrence Wong will be appointed as the next Prime Minister on the same day,” Lee said via social media, according to AFP.

Lee has served as prime minister and chairman of the People’s Action Party (PAP) since August 2004. He announced his resignation and appointed Wong as his successor in November last year. Lee had planned to retire before turning 70, but it was delayed because of the Covid-19 pandemic.
