SEAToday.com, Gresik - The Trade Ministry is ready to support PT Freeport Indonesia (PTFI) ahead of the operation of its second smelter in Gresik, East Java, said Trade Minister Zulkifli Hasan on Tuesday (11/30).
Minister Zulkifli stated that his ministry is ready to provide the necessary support, one of which is the extension of the copper export license regulation. He also hoped for the operation of the second smelter to boost economic growth and the welfare of the surrounding community.
PTFI President Director Tony Wenas stated that the progress of smelter construction is currently estimated to have reached 83 percent. PTFI has invested USD2.9 billion of the total USD3 billion budget.
Tony also mentioned that the second smelter could begin operation by the end of May 2024. Once operational, the smelter can process copper concentrate with a production capacity of 1.7 million dry metric tons (dmt) and produce copper cathode up to 600,000 tons per year.
